There will be a fund-raising event at the Lloyds pub, Wilbraham Rd,
Chorlton on Thursday 6 November 2008, 8.30-11.00 for Cuba hurricane
relief - why? because Cuba has experienced the 'worst ever' devastation
and is in need of aid to repair buildings and guarantee food supply.
Information about the scale of the disaster - see below <#stats>.
The band Cajun Street Preachers will play - a rerun of previous popular
events with raffle, stall, collection.
Dave Eatock, the band accordionist has written a song for the
Miami/Cuban 5 and this will be played. The Band's new CD - /Things can
Change/ will be on sale to contribute to the fund-raising effort too.

* *500,000 houses lost of which over 63,000 are totally
destroyed. 80% of houses on the Isle of Youth destroyed.*
* *700,000 tonnes of food lost*
* *The food shortage was caused when twin hurricanes Gustav and Ike
ripped through the island nation this month, damaging crops of
rice, beans, plantains and sweet potatoes, killing farm animals.*
* * ...damages to electricity, water systems, in short, the entire
infrastructure of the country including schools, clinics,
hospitals. Just imagine an entire country hit by Katrina from one
end to the other and you'll get an idea of the devastation!
Preliminary estimates by Cuba is that losses are in the range of
$5 billion.*
* * The path of destruction stretches for more than a thousand
kilometres across the island. In some areas of the country the
scenes resemble those of an earthquake: sealed-off roads, houses
demolished into scattered brick and dust, some flooded; electrical
cables and towers toppled; plantations devastated.*
* *Biggest problems - the scale of the damage to housing - replacing
all those roofs. Potential shortages of food because of the
damage to farming.*
