In 2003, a young British peace activist and photographer was shot by
an Israeli soldier while trying to help a group of Palestinian
children in Gaza. "Why were they firing on small children? And why did
they shoot an unarmed man who was so clearly trying to see them to
safety?" asks his mother with surprising dignity. Simon Block's
powerful drama based on true events follows the family's attempts to
find out what happened and get the Israeli army to accept
responsibility. It's well worth watching and deserves a bigger
audience than it will probably get. In part this is down to the strong
cast but it's also Rowan Joffe's tight direction, which fuels the
tension without detracting in the slightest from the harrowing
depiction of a personal tragedy.
