"Then & Now" - Impact of Terrorism Legislation on the
South Asian Community Conference in Manchester

Thursday, 23 February 2006 (1:00pm-5:00pm)

Confederation of Indian Organisations (CIO) is a National
Organisation who supports the development and strengthening of South
Asian organisations and the Community. CIO's main aim is to ensure
that the needs of the South Asians communities are incorporated
within national and local policy and decision making.

Purpose of the Conference

The recent drive of legislation by the Government on the issue of
terrorism (Prevention of terrorism Act 2005), which has come into
force and could have significant effect on the lives of local people,
particularly the Asian community.

The Conference will highlight:

*	What to expect: Terrorism legislation
*	The relationship between Terrorism legislation and Racism
*	Can we feel safe?

These topics will be discussed to clarify the legislation to the
audience and to explain the process or procedure involved and
specifically rights of the individual involved. There have been
incidents where the police have been shown to be institutionally
racist, so what effect would these extra powers given to the police
have on their actions, and more importantly how would it affect us.

* The Lord Mayor of Manchester Councillor Mohammad Afzal Khan
* Representative from Greater Manchester Police
* Fahad Ansari (Islamic Human Rights Commission)
* Dr. Tara Kumar Mukherjee (Confederation of Indian
