Hurricane Protection or Nuclear Weapons in Space?

On Thursday 6th October at the Unitarian Chapel, Cross Street,
Manchester, peace campaigners from across Greater Manchester will
welcome Bruce Gagnon to the City of Peace.

Bruce Gagnon is the Coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons &
Nuclear Power in Space. He was the organiser of the Cancel Cassini
Campaign (which launched 72 pounds of plutonium into space in 1997)
that drew enormous support and media coverage around the world and was
featured on the TV programme 60 Minutes.
[[Eds' note: it was the spacecraft Cassini that was powered by
Plutonium, not the campaign; both attracted much media coverage!]

Bruce is visiting Manchester from the US as part of his European 'Keep
Space for Peace' speaking tour. Bruce said "the US military are looking
seriously at the use of lasers, space based missiles and attack vehicles
that descend on targets from space; killer satellites, which would
disrupt or destroy other nation's satellites; and tungsten rods fired
from space platforms that would be able to penetrate underground
targets. Some of this programme is already underway and the US missile
defence system (also known as “Son of Star Wars”) includes the use of
bases in the UK (at RAF Menwith Hill and RAF Fylingdales). To date, the
US has spent well more than $130 billion on Star Wars research and
development. The budget for military-related space activity and is
expected to grow to more than $25 billion a year by 2010. The
consequences of supporting the growing cost of space weapons technology
will mean that some social programmes may suffer – the devastation
caused by hurricane Katrina has now illustrated what that might mean to
the American public."

Dave Knight will join Bruce Gagnon on the platform. Dave is Chair of
the Advisory Board of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear
Power in Space and their UN Representative. Dave is also an active
member of Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

                                - ENDS-
