Dear All,

You are cordially invited to join this Friends of the Fallowfield Loop
social ride. David's description gives a good indication of the disatnce
and surface conditions so you can decide if it suits you.

Regards,

Dick Venes.

Subject:	ride on July 10th

Dear All,

I've just done a 'scoping' ride along the route for July 10th, and it all
looks eminently feasible. The Loop is completed through to Fairfield
station, and from there it only takes a minor road to reach the Ashton
canal going east. There are two short sections of the canal towpath along
the Ashton and Peak Forest canals respectively which are a bit overgrown
and muddy, and a short section of the trans-Pennine trail in Reddish Vale
which is bumpy; otherwise the route is very straightforward and really
pleasant. I did it in well under three hours without hurrying.

There is a bonus for the ride that it coincides with the Tameside Canal
Festival at the Portland Basin (junction of the Ashton and Peak Forest
canals), where there will be a beer tent and floating tea room, besides
lots of narrow boats moored up. I've spoken to the guy who runs the tea
room, and we could stop off there for 'brunch' if we put in our orders by
mobile phone at the start of the ride (timing there about 11.30. I don't
have a mobile, but assume someone else will ). There are some really good
spots for a picnic stop along the Tameside trail, and there is another
tea-room at the Reddish Vale Country Park. The only downside is the lack of
pubs along the route (the Cheshire Ring in Hyde was closed when I passed
through), but there is a late stop possible at the Reddish Vale on Longford
Road West in Reddish (not very prepossessing from the outside but it was
open!). We can definitely think of getting back to the starting point by
2.30 pm.

Dick, could you send out a reminder of the ride to members by email? Latest
details are as follows:

Start: 10.30 am Sainsbury's Fallowfield car park by the recycling centre.
11 am. Debdale boat house
11.30 first main stop at Portland Basin (Tameside Canal Festival and
floating tea room)
12.45 refreshment stop on the Tameside path
1.30 optional call at the Reddish Vale pub.
2.30 latest, back at starting point.

Hope to see you there,

David

PS Tom and accomplice were mowing the verges today and clearing away
rubbish on the section east of Sainsbury's, so the Loop will be looking at
its best for the ride.
