Breakfast at Christies

The Council Chamber, Whitworth Building, Manchester University
Wednesday 5th October 2005 - 08.15 a.m. for 8.30 a.m. start

There are still some places available at the following event.

Have some Respect!!

The Government has pledged a commitment to creating a society based on
respect for all. Will this lead to an Orwellian future of clamp downs,
curfews and thought control or a consensual society where citizenship
and mutual respect leads to high levels of community cohesion?

For Neil McInroy, Director of the Centre for Local Economic Strategies
(CLES), the respect agenda is a whole lot more than verbal attacks on
hoodies and Anti Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs). Instead he will argue
that a successful respect agenda must utilise empowerment and
enforcement strategies. In this debate Neil will consider the correct
balance between enforcement and empowerment measures, highlighting how
healthy civic life requires heterogeneity, including intergenerational
respect, mixing of groups and an appreciation of difference. He will
also suggest when and in what setting there are possible civic benefits
afforded by social discord.

Join us for what should prove to be a lively discussion.

The discussion will be chaired by Steve Connor of Creative Concern and
breakfast will be provided by the Christie Bistro. Places are limited so
to find out more about the Group and to confirm your attendance, please
visit the Breakfast at Christies website now at

Breakfast at Christies is sponsored by the University of Manchester and
exists to share knowledge, good practice and fresh ideas about
sustainable development in England's Northwest. It aims to create links,
forge new partnerships and encourage an ever-greater integration of
sustainability into the region's strategic future.

The Group meets at the Christie Bistro or Council Chamber (depending on
numbers) in the University of Manchester at 8.15 a.m. for 8.30 a.m.
sharp. A huge range of engaging and dynamic speakers have featured at
previous breakfasts, drawn from a host of regional and national
organisations.
