I've been reminded that Manchester & Salford council's are holding a car
free day event this Sun. Unfort there seems little publicity and this is
all I could find from the Salford council web site:

"In town, without my car!"
Clever commuting comes to Salford!

Walk on down to Bridge Street West, and New Bailey Street, on Sunday 18
September and help us celebrate “In town, without my car!” day. The fume
free fun day is host to the UK’s only solar and wind powered, all human
green circus.

Why "In town without my car!"?The aim of the day is to encourage people
to consider healthier and more environmentally friendly methods of
travel, such as public transport, walking and cycling. Bridge Street
West and New Bailey Street will be closed for the day. Colourful clowns,
jugglers and even a solar powered roundabout will be driving this car
free zone into an arena of frenzied entertainment! The event runs from
12pm to 5pm.

What's in it for me? You will have the chance to participate in
workshops and hands-on activities, enjoy live entertainment, displays
and exhibitions. You will also be able to enjoy a peaceful, al fresco
lunch in a special urban picnic area, which is set up in front of the
People’s History Museum. Street entertainers, river activities and live
music will contribute to the carnival atmosphere.

A variety of stalls will offer information and advice on a range of
issues including health, sustainable travel and environmental concerns.
Fair-trade and Farmers Market stalls will provide an opportunity to buy
products that promote sustainable and healthy living.

Make sure you visit the special exhibitions at the People's History
Museum, which explores the evolution of public transport in Salford
through the ages as well as the history of the Manchester Ship Canal.

How do I get there? Bridge Street West in Manchester and New Bailey
Street in Salford will be closed to traffic. There will be alterations
to bus routes serving both streets however other Sunday services on all
modes of public transport will be unaffected. Free public transport
tickets from GMPTE with be distributed at the event.

Committed to sustainable travel. Salford and Manchester City Councils
have teamed together to make this year’s event the best yet!! Councillor
Derek Antrobus, lead member for planning at Salford City Council, said:
“With over 70% of households now owning more than one car, it’s more
important than ever to reinforce the message about being environmentally
aware. We’re joining forces with Manchester City Council to encourage
people to think about greener and healthier options of travelling to
benefit themselves and the wider community.”
