NATIONAL ZOO AWARENESS DAY - MONDAY 29th August 2005

Animals in zoos suffer a miserable life of boredom and suppression of their
natural instincts. Birds are restricted from flying properly, cheetahs
cannot reach the speeds that make them the fastest animal on land,
elephants cannot walk the many miles they would do in the wild. Many
animals simply go mad, pacing up and down the same route over and over.

Zoos have put the con in conservation - they even take animals from the wild.

To really protect wild animals their natural habitat needs protecting
rather than confining animals to captivity with no hope of release. Every
year the Captive Animals' Protection Society (CAPS) organises National Zoo
Awareness Day to raise awareness of the animal welfare and conservation
problems of zoos. August Bank Holiday Monday is traditionally seen as the
start of the 'closing season' for zoos and is one of the biggest days in
any zoo's calendar.
