Tyndall Centre Workshop on

Using Multi-criteria Methods to Assess Energy Scenarios with a 60%
Carbon Reduction

Manchester, 4th & 5th July 2005

The Tyndall Centre is currently developing a new, comprehensive
and diverse set of energy scenarios designed to meet the
government’s target of a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050.
The scenarios draw together results from other key Theme 2
projects that have involved engineers, economists, natural and
social scientists to explore a range of technical, managerial and
behavioural strategies to reduce carbon emissions. The Integrated
Scenarios project will provide the energy policy and analysis
community with a suite of alternative carbon-constrained futures for
the UK that, for the first time, include emissions from international
aviation and shipping.
We have developed eight end point scenarios which outline a range
of demand and supply options which all achieve a 60% carbon
dioxide reduction target by 2050. These scenarios have been
assessed by a group of energy experts at a meeting held in
November 2004 and revised accordingly to take account of those
experts’ opinions concerning the credibility, consistency and
validity of the scenarios. Furthermore, the scenarios have been
used as the basis for a backcasting workshop where energy
experts and stakeholders outlined the transition from the present
day to a desired end-point (from the perspective of carbon
emissions).
The next stage of the project is to explore the consequences of the
end-points and the pathways through which these are achieved. A
participative multi-criteria method will be employed over the course
of a one and a half day workshop to be held at the University of
Manchester. The workshop will begin with lunch at 1pm on
Monday the 4th of July and run through to 4.30 pm on Tuesday the
5th of July. We would like to invite you to the workshop and hope
very much that you will be able to attend.
If you would like any further information on the project and
workshop, or would like to discuss anything in advance, please
contact Drs Simon Shackley, Sarah Mander, or Alice Bows. We
will pay all travel and subsistence expenses for attending this
event. There will be a reception and dinner on the evening of the 4th
July.
Please send an email to Sarah Mander at
s.mander at manchester.ac.uk to register your attendance. Your
input into our project will be greatly valued and appreciated.
Best regards and we look forward to hearing from you
