                       Breakfast at Christies

The Council Chamber, Whitworth Building, Manchester University
Wednesday 22 June 2005 - 08.15 a.m. for 8.30 a.m. start

“The artist as designer of urban spaces”

The professions of planning and design have produced outstanding
mediocrity in our towns and cities – is it time hand this design
mantle to artists?

The ASPiration Project is intended to let 'artists inspire and
communities decide'. It promises to turn the planning and design
process on its head by using the creativity of artists working with
development professionals and the public to innovate and develop
better, more people-friendly environments.

The ASPiration Project members are part of SEA (Social and
Environmental Arts) a research and practice group in MIRIAD
(Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and
Design) at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Presenting their arguments for this radical new approach to design
are:
Ed Bennis: Landscape Architect, Head of Centre for Landscape
Research
David Haley: Ecological Artist, MIRIAD Research Fellow, Head of
Water and Well Being
Chrissie Gibson: Chartered Town Planner, Principal Lecturer in
Environmental and Geographical Sciences

Are towns and cities bland and boring? Do artists hold the key to
the future of the planning process? Is community engagement the
way forward? Or is planning and design best left to the “tried and
trusted method”?

Join us for what should prove to be a lively discussion.

The discussion will be chaired by Steve Connor of Creative Concern
and breakfast will be provided by the Christie Bistro. Places are
limited so to find out more about the Group and to confirm your
attendance, please visit the Breakfast at Christies website now at

Breakfast at Christies is sponsored by the University of
Manchester and exists to share knowledge, good practice and
fresh ideas about sustainable development in England's Northwest.
It aims to create links, forge new partnerships and encourage an
ever-greater integration of sustainability into the region's strategic
future.

The Group meets at the Christie Bistro or Council Chamber
(depending on numbers) in the University of Manchester at 8.15
a.m. for 8.30 a.m. sharp. A huge range of engaging and dynamic
speakers have featured at previous breakfasts, drawn from a host of
regional and national organisations.
